Food is one of the most important aspects of "Like Water For Chocolate." It acts as a physical representation of emotion, or a medicinal potion. Food, even takes on it own personality in the book.
When Mama Elena is assualted and is left in a frail state, Tita wants to use food to heal her, unfortunatly, because of her arrogance, Mama Elena died. It is also used to help Rosaura and her digestive problem.
Food acts a physical representation of emotion in the novel. When Tita cooks, her mother claims that all her foods taste bitter, an obvious allusion to Tita's feelings towards her mother.
Examples of personification can be found though food, such as when Tita's tamales are cooking slowly due to the negative energy. Tita then thinks about postive things the beans become ready.
